• A personal note on IGBP and the social sciences

Humans are an integral component of the Earth system as conceptualised by IGBP. João Morais recalls key milestones in IGBP’s engagement with the social sciences and offers some words of advice for Future Earth.
  • IGBP and Earth observation:
    a co-evolution

The iconic images of Earth beamed back by the earliest spacecraft helped to galvanise interest in our planet’s environment. The subsequent evolution and development of satellites for Earth observation has been intricately linked with that of IGBP and other global-change research programmes, write Jack Kaye and Cat Downy .

ARABESQUE: UK JGOFS Process Studies in the Arabian Sea

Deep Sea Research II (1999)
Burkill P H (ed)
Vol 46; Nos 3-4

ARABESQUE was an UK marine biogeochemistry programme that formed the main contribution to international JGOFS Process Studies in the Arabian Sea (1994-1997). Led by Plymouth Marine Laboratory, scientists from 10 organisations in Canada, Oman, Germany, UK and USA contributed their skills to work together on upper-ocean biogeochemistry in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman.

ARABESQUE was conducted over two seasons: the SW Monsoon and the following intermonsoon-NE Monsoon period in 1994. Key topics addressed in the contrasting seasonal eutrophic upwelling and mesotrophic downwelling waters and a seasonal oligotrophic waters included assessment of the rates of, and controls on, phytoplankton production, the fate of phytogenic carbon through herbivory, DOC, bacteria and bacterivory, and sedimentation, the rates and mechanisms of formation of biogenic gas, DMS, N2O, CH4 and CO, ageing of water masses by CFC's.
